Genre is a style or category of art, music or literature. The genre of a film essentially determines the type of audience that will entertain a product. During the pre production of my short-film, the genre was the most important aspect when we considered how the film would be. We decided to choose a social realism genre because we were inspired by hollywood productions such as 'inception' and shutter island. We were also inspired by a under appreciated short film by the name of 'mr. happy'. We admired these film's ability to captivate an audience while leaving them confused of how why the editing occurred. From this instance we decided to adapt a inception-like theme, hoping to present an unusual feeling to the audience throughout the film. However, we did not have the access to expensive, high-tech equipment; therefore we decided on the genre of social realism so that we were able to maximise our equipment and produce a film that is just as effective as others.
Daniel Chandler states that 'conventional definitions of genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content and/or form which are shared by the texts which are regarded as belonging to them". Chandler is implying that genre is usually depicted from the theme of the film. When producing my short-film, i placed a lot of importance on constructing the style of the scenes so that they can evoke a feeling that correlates with the genre.
For instance, we used drug addiction in our short film to symbolise what is in between the protagonists reality and destination. This symbol was perpetrated constantly throughout the film and represents social realism because in essence it represents a situation that is consistent in contemporary society.
Steve Neale declares that "genres are instances of repetition and differences". He added that "difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre". This quote resonated a lot with our griup and enhanced our decision of pushing the boundaries with our film. We then constructed a plot for the film and decided on the twist ending that aligns perfectly with the theme of depression or Social Realism. We chose to have the main character die in a car crash, with the person who killed her being the man she envisioned her self with once she became successful.
Deborah knight noted that "satisfaction is guaranteed with genre; the deferral of the inevitable provides the additional pleasure of prolonged anticipation". Deborah knight believed that it is important for an individual to anticipate a particular feeling when considering genre. Therefore, in my film i decided to portray this statement by creating scenes within the film that the audience can identify with.
Overall, i concentrated on the works of many theorists and applied the knowledge learned to the production of 'The Dopple Ganger'.
