1. Synopsis: What is the short film about? Write a brief synopsis including information bout the
director/Cinematographer. Comment on awards given to this film.
The director and cinematography, Taika Waititi chose to use a number of techniques in order to evoke different feelings and emotions throughout the film.
In the Beginning of the film, the boys are seen waiting in the front seats of a vehicle while time is flying by. However, the throughout this beginning seen and the rest of the film, the technique that is used to speed up the film makes it seem as if a large amount of time is passing by. In reality the amount of time that is passing by can most likely be estimated at about an hour or less. This creates a feeling that many people can identify with because as an adolescent, a small amount of time can feel like an eternity.
Then a new character is introduced, sitting in the front seat of a car a few feet away from the two boys. The cinematographer uses a series of reverse shot camera angles to create dialogue between the girl and the boy who seems to be reluctant towards the girl in the beginning but soon begins to develop a liking for her.

2. Comment on the quote analyse what the directors aim was when creating this short film. What differs from the conventional hollywood movies and what must shot films aim to do?
“There are a few moments in childhood that have a lasting impact. Not because they change the course of your life, or because they arrive with and great fanfare, in fact quit the opposite. Those are moments where an unexpected joy is found in the everyday, a moment of beauty in the ordinary”.
The director of the film’s aim was to create a short flick about a unique situation that does not necessarily get enough recognition in mainstream cinema. The idea of a childhood moment that may not seem as significant as other life events, holding a true importance in an individual’s life is an odd situation and will most likely only entertain a niche market. The director wanted to demonstrate how something such as an hour of childhood love could amplify the ordinary.

3. Comment on the choice of Mise en Scene, what social groups represented in the film and how does the Mise en Scene help emphasise this?
The Mise en Scene in the film helps represent various different social groups. Firstly, the bar, carpark, and car showcase that the children in the film are living in and adult world. It seems as their surroundings are setup for their elders to function in, however they are just drifting about.Next, the “ring” plays a huge importance in the film. The way the characters react towards the ring shows that they may have grown up in poverty because the boy acted as if the ring was something he had never seen before. The glamorisation of the ring symbolizes the lack of wealth which helps perpetuate the story of an innocent young companionship.
4. Comment on the choice of sound, give examples and explain how this choice of sound evokes mood and helps present the film from a child's point of view.
The sound in the film also contributes to the presentation of mood in the film. In the beginning of the film, sound effects are used to show that many cars are moving in and out of the parking lot. This helps emphasise the idea of time moving forward and the characters staying still. The sound of the radio was also a key moment in the film because the rumbling effect was used to show that what was being said held little importance. This further supports the theme of the film, which is the kids being in an adult world.
5. How does the choice in editing create a feeling of time passing slowly. Comment on the opening sequence.
The choice of editing in the film creates a feeling of time passing by slowly with the use of various techniques. Throughout the “time-lapse” editing technique is used in order to show that cars are moving in and out of the parking lot and pedestrians are entering and leaving the bar. A series of cuts are used to display that time has moved throughout the dialogue between the boy and the girl. For example, a panning view was done after a cut, which led to the girl getting frightened by the boy after he tapped on the car window. The director also used this technique to surprise the audience, which allows the viewers to relate to the little girl.
6. How does the use of black and white create a feeling of reminiscence and add further detail, what other effect does the use of black and white give.
The use of black and white creates a feeling of reminiscence because it is an old form of film presentation, therefore the kids allow viewers to create a comparison between the film and their childhood.
7. Comment on the choice of three camera angles and what effect this gives, where does it position the audience and why do you think the cinematographer chose these shots
The camera angle shown in this screenshot was very intricate in the presentation of this film. It assisted in informing the viewer that time is moving past, people are entering and exiting the bar but the car seems to staying still.

This long shot was used in order to give a better view of the environment during the scene. It shows the two cars, parked directly next to eachother meanwhile the adults are leaving the kids behind in the car. This was important in the film because it demonstrated that the same thing was happening to all of the kids. They were left to wait in the car while the adults tend to their adult hobbies.

This close up shows a blurred image of the girl in the back ground, with the focus of the image being the ring. The ring is significant in this image because it symbolizes wealth, something that these poor kids are not accustomed too, therefore the focus was a vital part of the film.
